Sunview visit

Christmas came early to Ikana and the Glass family with a visit to Christchurch by our Guangzhou Ikana Distributers, Sabine and William and Rachael of Zhi Wing. Also Reggie Li called by from Beijing - that man Reggie is the Mussel Messiah! Stunning tenderness and flavor. Also Akaroa Salmon, Whitebait fritters and Paua patties....and that was just the Entree! Julie whipped up a classic Turkey and Pork Xmas dinner to finish us all off. Great fun!

Mr Grant Fuller Joins Ikana NZ as Director International Marketing

We are excited to share that Mr Grant Fuller has taken a new position with Ikana as our Director of International Marketing. As the title suggests Grant will be focusing on the opening of new countries and markets for our live shellfish products, particularly Greenshell Mussel and Blackfoot Paua, and particularly in South East Asia and North Asia. He will also play a key role in the further development of our China market, both existing cities as well as fledgling and new provinces.

Grant is a Kiwi lad from finest Canterbury stock out of Christchurch. He has represented Canterbury at senior level in hockey and at senior club level in cricket. He now resides in Wellington with wife Rebecca and their two lads Luke & Daniel, but he importantly remains a resolute one-eyed supporter of the Canterbury Crusaders.  Grant has enjoyed an extensive career with NZTE that has included Trade Commissioner roles in Shanghai, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur (where Grant also had responsibility for Indonesia and Brunei). Grant also worked in Beijing in a business development role for 3 years, and recently lived and worked in Guangzhou for three years as well. We have had the pleasure of getting to know Grant over the last 18 months as he has helped to orientate and introduce us to China contacts as well as begin to improve our understanding of the many markets and channels within this vast country, as well as the pace of change that occurs there.

We are already greatly enjoying working with Grant and are appreciating his passion and belief in our product as well as his professionalism and humour. We look forward to introducing him to our customers over the coming weeks.

Ahiahi Brand Distributer for Southern China, Pinhui’s Scott Su and Wayne Di visit us in Christchurch, New Zealand

A wonderful day was had when Steve and Tony hosted Scott and Wayne through our Christchurch process/pack facility and a visit out on the water to view one of the mussel farms at Port Levy in the Banks Peninsula, owned by our supply partner Simon Acton-Adams and local farmers Phillip Help and Edward Aitken. Phillip and Edward kindly delivered us out on the water to the barge during mussel harvest where we introduced Scott and Wayne to Sam Helps the skipper of the St George, and his crew. Simon, Phillip and Sam are always so helpful with these visits from our special market distribution partners and the ability to get onto a barge and view the harvest process up-front and personal is so very educational and invaluable for strengthening our relationships from farm to market. Some tasting of the live raw mussels straight from the sea was a new experience, thankfully supplemented with a super lunch on dry land later at the Sa Ra Japanese restaurant where we caught up with our Ahiahi Exporter Mike Chin and his Ops Mgr Jeremy Greenwood. A jolly fine day…thank you Scott and Wayne!

Beijing Ann Mass Mutual visits Ikana in Christchurch, New Zealand

We were very excited to host Mr Wells Wang, owner of Beijing AMM, and his Snr Seafood Purchasing Manager Ms Cindy in their visit to our Christchurch facility. Beijing AMM has been working very hard over the past year to introduce our Ikana NZ greenshell live mussel to the Beijing market. Their progress in establishing our product has made some excellent gains this year. The visit was a fabulous opportunity to develop our friendship, and we learned more about the Beijing market and Beijing AMM’s operation. We were very honoured that Wells and Cindy accepted an invitation to join Steve and Julie at their home for the evening dinner and to meet the Glass family children. The menu included Julie’s latest recipe for mussel dumplings which Cindy assured us were very good!..and a very good example of how China cuisine might prepare and enjoy this dish. Thank you Wells and Cindy!

Ikana live Mussels enjoyed straight from the shell

At a recent family function, while shucking, some hardy New Zealand fisherman enjoyed eating the Mussels Raw and straight from the shell. In their opinion they considered the Ikana Mussels the best that they had ever eaten. We had trouble rescuing enough for cooking for the rest of the family gathering from these "greedy fellows".

Ikana Hosts "The Happy Monk" from Guangzhou to Stewart Island

Our Thanks to Jeremy and his family and some of the Happy Monk team for a fun filled two days visiting the source of our Ikana product. Some good wine and cider, Paua (blackfoot that is), Cod (blue that is) and of course fresh Mussels (green that is!).

You guys are the coolest.... Come again!

Ikana Director and Owner, Mr Steve Glass, says that it is exciting to be associated with Gfresh, a company with integrity, that is very focused and specialized in seafood handling and very professional in the way it conducts its business.

Mr Glass states that the recent equity investment in Gfresh by connections with Alibaba make it a platform that could be able to offer a competitive B2C offering for Ikana in the future, for which the Ikana extended shelf-life sealed portion-controlled packs and technology are ideally suited to deliver super-fresh and dependably alive mussels into the homes of the PRC, directly from New Zealand.

New owner for Ikana Brand

Ikana New Zealand Ltd is proud to announce they have purchased the assets and Ikana brand off Greenshell New Zealand Ltd and have relocated the processing facilities to 24 Klondyke Drive in Hornby, Christchurch. From this new premises Ikana NZ plans to carry on the great work done by Greenshell NZ in opening up export markets in the Pacific Basin for quality shellfish with an emphasis on live Greenshell mussels. We have an abundance of naturally grown seafood from unpolluted waters which gives us a nice competitive advantage. Our early feedback from markets in China and the US suggests we can expect to be exporting to both places within the next couple of months.”
Ikana NZ have located close to Christchurch's International airport, and the location makes it easier to source their mussels from all areas of the South Island of New Zealand. “We are convinced we have some of the best quality mussels available internationally and are looking forward to treating the world to them” says Mr Glass.

Greenshell New Zealand takes home supreme award

Greenshell New Zealand proved just how strong its mussel business is at last week’s American Chamber of Commerce DHL Express Success & Innovation Awards, scooping up two prestigious awards.

Held at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland, the family-owned business was recognised and rewarded for exports of its innovative products under the award-winning Ikana brand.

Presented by Prime Minister John Key, Greenshell New Zealand won both The Exporter of the Year to the USA Award from the $500,000 to $5 million category and The Supreme Award 2013.

Peter Vitasovich, managing director of Greenshell, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have received these awards as we’ve all worked extremely hard.”

“We’re proud of the progress we are making in transforming from a mussel farming operation to a branded food company.”

“We now have an innovative product range marketed under the Ikana brand:  this is core to our export strategy and it’s very rewarding to see our efforts being recognised.”

“We’d like to thank the team at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise for all their support in developing our business as well as a special thanks to our staff for all of their hard work.”

“It was great to see two businesses from the aquaculture sector making the final (Greenshell New Zealand and Mt Cook Alpine Salmon). To win two awards against such an impressive line up of New Zealand companies was a huge achievement for our industry.”

Greenshell New Zealand won the following awards:

  • The Exporter of the Year to the USA Award (from the $500,000 to $5 million category)
  • The Supreme Award 2013

Greenshell New Zealand scoops food & beverage exporter of the year award

Greenshell New Zealand was proud as punch last night as it received the prestigious 'Food & Beverage Exporter of the Year' award at the hotly contested Export NZ Awards 2013 held at The Langham, Auckland.

Judged against New Zealand designers, yacht masts and home yoghurt making kits, that are all doing great business on distant shores, Greenshell New Zealand showed its mussel power with innovation and tenacity in global markets.

Greenshell New Zealand is a vertically integrated, family-owned food business, engaged in farming, processing and marketing Greenshell™ Mussels under the Ikana brand.  Peter Vitasovich, owner comments, “Any recognition is welcomed, but this award is particularly prestigious as we have worked hard to develop our brand in overseas markets.  The time is right for our innovative product range as people search for alternative sources of protein.  Our Ikana mussels really are a super food and its only right that we share this with the world!”

Executive officer Catherine Lye from Export New Zealand Auckland – organisers of the awards, says, “It was a tough field, with such highly motivated and innovative exporters. This goes to show the variety of clever ways Kiwis are succeeding on the world stage and we are delighted for Greenshell New Zealand who really stood out for challenging the existing mussel market by using the Ikana brand to bring added value and integrity to international markets.”

Look out for Ikana on TV3....

When celebrity chef, Sean Connolly, host of On The Grill and award winning restaurant of the year went looking for the best of New Zealand produce, he found IKANA Greenshell Mussels.

We enjoyed a day out on a working mussel barge with Sean braving the cold water to harvest a few mussels for lunch from our Sea Gardens and creating a feast for the crew.

Back on land Sean created a magical meal at The Grill which will long be remembered. We ate mussels as if we had never tasted them before!

Watch TV3 on Saturday 17 November at 7pm to see the Ikana episode.
